Former employee killed during Idaho credit union robbery attempt

A security guard shot and killed the robber at the Global Credit Union in Coeur d'Alene Saturday afternoon.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — Police are investigating a fatal shooting that left one man dead at a Global Credit Union in Coeur d'Alene on Saturday.

Police said 34-year-old Josh Martz went into the credit union wearing a mask and a motorcycle helmet. Officers believe Martz had intentions of robbing the branch.

Martz was reportedly carrying a gun and shots were fired between Martz and the security guard on duty. Martz was hit and died at the scene from his injuries.

On Monday, officials determined that the fatal shot was from the security guard's gun.

Police said Monday that Martz was a former manager at the credit union. He was hired in March 2018 and walked away from the job just three months later.

The credit union's president said Marts often clashed with his coworkers. After Martz left the job, the branch decided to hire a security guard specifically because the employees believed Martz was a threat.

Martz's profile on the business networking website LinkedIn, showed him working at a handful of banks in the Spokane-Coeur d'Alene area over the last decade. In an online bio, he described himself as being a "die-hard patriot." He also wrote that he had a respect for people who do what is best for their country and hold their beliefs even if they go against societal norms.

Police have labeled the incident as an attempted robbery, but officers are still trying to determine Martz's motive.

The credit union president said he believes Martz showed up to the building on Saturday for retaliation, and not just to rob the branch.

The credit union in Coeur d'Alene remained closed Monday as police continued their investigation.
