WILDER, Idaho -- Have you ever wanted to experience what it would be like to serve in the Navy?
On Tuesday, Canyon County students got a small taste of a Navy adventure.
As America's need for STEM professionals continues to grow, the U.S. Navy says they want to take virtual reality experiences to high schools across the country to present the value and excitement of Naval career opportunities in an interactive way.
Students at COSSA Academy in Wilder took part in the Navy STEM tour as it makes its way across the Gem State. Part of the experience includes a Navy-engineered virtual reality rescue mission.
The mission allows students to navigate the forcefulness of the sea through the eyes of a Navel SEAL to give them a small look into what SEALS really do.
Nampa Navy Sailor, First Class Petty Officer Peter Villanueva, says getting to show students the realities of being in the Navy helps potential recruits understand what experiences they could expect other than being on a boat.
“There are other jobs - there is medical field, there is engineering, there is nuclear. This is just a small part of it, but it's important for them to see there is more in the Navy than what people believe and perceive," said Villanueva.
The STEM tour will continue through Ada County with visits to Eagle High School Thursday and Friday.
