Boise man turns in guns to police, challenges others to do the same

After last week's school shooting in Florida that left 17 people dead, Kevin Rogers decided to get rid of his weapons and wants to inspire others to do the same.

A Boise man, who doesn't want to see another mass shooting, has a challenge for gun owners.

After last week's school shooting in Florida that left 17 people dead, Kevin Rogers decided to get rid of his weapons and wants to inspire others to do the same.

“I just don't need guns in my house,” he said. “I don't want anything to do with them now and I challenge everybody to do the same thing.”

Rogers decided to hand over three guns to the Boise Police Department Monday morning.

“The police wanted to be sure that I didn't want to sell these to Cabela’s and get a little money for them because they said they're just going to destroy them,” Rogers said. “Then I said, 'I don't want anybody else to have them."

Rogers describes himself as an avid shooter and a “believer in guns,” but after the most recent school shooting he decided he didn’t need his guns.

“If we really want to prevent this, if we really want to stop this, we're going to let the police do their jobs. We're going to give them our guns,” he said.

According to Boise Police, so far, Rogers is the only person who has turned over weapons to their department.

If you want to turn your guns into police you can either have police come to you or you can take them to the station.

If you want to have police come to you, like Rogers did, BPD said first call the non-emergency dispatch number at 208-377-6790. Then make sure the guns are unloaded, remove all ammo and magazines from the guns, make sure the safety is on, and if possible, put the gun in a box or case that guns can be transported in.

Do not have the guns in your hands when officers arrive.

If you choose to bring your gun to the police station make sure you call ahead. Do not bring the guns into the station. Once you arrive at the station talk to the person at the front desk. That person will call an officer who will help you turn over the gun. Make sure the guns are unloaded, remove all ammo and magazines from the guns, make sure the safety is on, and if possible, put the gun in a box or case that guns can be transported in.
