Mom Matters: This Week’s Topic: Moms Need Better Work Options

This week on Mom Matters, the panel discusses the need for better work options.

Being a mom is not the only job that most women have. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, up to 78 percent of mothers -- whose youngest child was 6-17 years old -- were working mothers in 2023. For one-parent families in which the mother was the head of the household, that rate goes up to 80 percent.

This week on Mom Matters, the panel discusses the need for better work options. “Working moms are not who we were before the pandemic, but the typical 9 to 5 job never worked,” says Shannon McGuire, Founder of Supreme Moms.

To achieve a work-life balance, working mothers need flexible employers and hours – much like the remote work that prevailed during the pandemic.

“Along with job perks such as onsite daycare, we simply need support from our employers,” says Genevieve Nutting, Founder of Womeness Community. “I think the people that make these decisions need to step into the role of being a mom.”

Mom Matters on Idaho Today is a new series created by moms for moms as a safe place to share, collaborate and support one another. Panelist McGuire funded a Gallup poll focused specifically on Idaho moms. Host Mellisa Paul is utilizing this poll information for the initial segments of Mom Matters. This data will be available to the public on Mother’s Day, May 9th. (Watch Mom Matters on Wednesdays for more details.)
