Remembering Billy Graham's Boise crusade

BOISE - Tributes to the Reverend Billy Graham are pouring in from around the world Wednesday.

Graham, the most widely heard Christian Evangelist in history, died Wednesday morning at the age of 99.

For six decades, Graham traveled the world preaching a message about God's love and salvation.

Graham became known as "America's pastor” and he made an impression on many people here in the Gem State.

More than 30 years ago, Graham came to the Treasure Valley for a crusade, which is what they called his huge revival meetings. Graham held a crusade back in 1982 at the Pavilion at Boise State University.

The event drew thousands of people from all over. Montie Ralstin, the pastor at Discovery Church in Boise, attended that crusade. He said it was a full house; there wasn't an empty seat or even a place to stand.

Excitement surrounded the entire visit, Ralstin said.

“I think just being there. Being a part of what basically for us in this valley was history. I mean you have a world-renowned Evangelist who's come,” he said. “What I've always loved about Billy Graham is his message was a simple message, but it was a message of content and certainly concerning faith, but it was simple message to be [understood] by anyone."

Ralstin didn't meet Graham, but said from listening to many of Graham's sermons and interviews, Graham's personality was genuine. Ralstin believes that's why so many people were drawn to him.
