Salvation Army distributes 1,000 backpacks to needy kids

The backpacks are filled with school supplies for children in kindergarten through 12th grade.

BOISE — Thanks to generous donations, hundreds of Treasure Valley kids will be prepared to go back to school!

This afternoon, the Salvation Army was able to distribute nearly 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade -- all at no cost to parents.

"It can cost upwards of up to $200 to prepare your child for school, and a lot of working families just don't have that in their budget in the month of August, so this helps them still pay their rent and still buy food for their family and still prepare their kids for school so that they do to school the first day just like everybody else," said Nellie Baker, Salvation Army Director of Annual Gifts.

The Salvation Army says thanks to community partners and the generous community, they have been able to collect over 10,000 individual supplies this year.
