Woman who owns Nampa home listed in a fake Craigslist ad gets death threat from supposed scammer

A second victim of the Craigslist ad tried to move their belongings into Heidi Todd's backyard.

BOISE — The woman who owns a home listed in a fake ad on Craigslist is speaking to KTVB after she saw our story on Saturday about a different woman who lost money after responding to the fake ad.

“I just can’t believe people would do that,” said Heidi Todd, who owns the home listed in the fake ad.

A second woman says she sent money to the person behind that same Craigslist ad and then tried to move their belongings into Heidi’s backyard.

Heidi said she reached out to the person who posted the fake ads.

“I had him convinced that I was going to deposit $2,000 into his Chase Bank account because that's what he instructed me to do,” Todd said. “He said he had to move to Connecticut because his wife had leukemia and he was not able to show the house, but to just deposit the money and then he'll send the keys.”

When Heidi didn't send the deposit, she said the person behind the fake ad then reached out to her wanting to know why.

Heidi said that’s when she revealed who she was.

“He proceeded to get really mad at me and told me he would hunt me down and kill me and torch my house,” Todd said.

Heidi said she later reached out to police, but because most of these types of scams are untraceable, there's not a lot police can do except urge people to look out for warning signs.

Those warning signs include not being able to tour the place before putting down a deposit or being asked to send money on a prepaid card or through another untraceable way

Lastly, the Better Business Bureau and Boise Police Department tell KTVB that potential renters should try searching for any listings they come across in Google and see if that property is listed elsewhere with a different address or for a different amount.

Heidi also told KTVB that she uses a property management company to rent out her house. KTVB reached out to that property manager and he said that he is a victim of identity theft and that the fake ads on Craigslist are using his name, but he did not post those ads.
