PYEONGCHANG -- Victor, Idaho native Breezy Johnson is making a strong push to represent Team USA in the women's downhill final in PyeongChang.
Johnson recorded the 12th fastest overall downtime in a training run on Sunday, finishing in 1:41.28. More importantly, is was third-best among the seven Americans who participated, trailing only Lindsey Vonn and Alice McKennis.
The U.S. Alpine Ski Team can only select four athletes to compete in the downhill finals. Both Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin earned automatic bids, however, the latter of the two announced that she decided to pull out of the event early Monday morning.
That leaves Johnson in contention with five other Americans for the three available spots.
The third and final training run of the women's downhill will take place Monday at 7 p.m. MT. The training runs can act as a qualifier for athletes who are competing to represent their country in the event.
If Johnson does earn a discretionary pick, the final of the women's downhill will take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MT.
Johnson made her Olympic debut in the Super-G last Friday. She finished in 14th overall and was the second fastest American. At just 22-year-old, Johnson is the youngest member of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team.
