PYEONGCHANG - Two snowboarders with ties to Idaho posted strong runs in the men's halfpipe finals Tuesday night, as American snowboard icon Shaun White picked up the third Olympic gold medal of his career.
Hailey's Chase Josey, who was in third place after the first of three rounds, ended up in sixth. After a fall on his second run, he bounced back, and posted his best score of the day - 88.00.
Like Josey, Ben Ferguson's final run was his strongest. His score of 90.75 was good enough for fourth place, just outside medal contention. Ferguson was born in Boise and lives in Bend, Ore.
But the star of the night was undoubtedly Shaun White. After being shut out of the medals four years ago in Sochi, White showed he is still the standard-bearer in the men's snowboard halfpipe.
The final podium standings came down to the final three riders: Japan's Ayumu Hirano, Scotty James of Australia, and White.
With White in second place going into his third and final run, he needed to go big. And he did just that, posting a score of 97.75. Hirano claimed silver and James took bronze.
