PYEONGCHANG — Sun Valley women’s hockey star Hilary Knight is one win away from achieving the one goal she brought with her to the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Knight and Team USA thrashed Finland, 5-0, in the semifinals of the women’s hockey tournament on Sunday, setting up yet another USA-Canada showdown for the gold medal later this week.
The Americans carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission against Finland, then put the game out of reach for good with two power-play goals in a span of 34 seconds midway through the second period.
Knight was credited with the second of those two goals. The three-time Olympian redirected a pass from Sidney Morin passed Finland goalie Noora Raty to make it 4-0. It was Knight’s first goal of the 2018 Winter Games and fifth of her Olympic career.
Prior to The Games in PyeongChang, 28-year-old Knight summed up her goal in just three words: “Gold or bust.”
This will be the third straight Olympics that Team USA and Team Canada will meet in the goal medal game. Although the Americans have won seven of the last eight World Championships, the Canadians have dominated the head-to-head at the Olympics.
Team USA has not beaten Team Canada in the Olympics since 1998, which also happens to be the last - and only - time the Americans won gold.
The two have already met once in PyeongChang. Canada won, 2-1, in the preliminary round, and claimed their fifth straight victory over the Americans at the Olympics.
