Matthew McConaughey Shares What He Learned From Being Arrested While Playing the Bongo Drums Naked

Matthew McConaughey only has one regret about the naked bongo drumming session that led to his arrest.

Matthew McConaughey only has one regret about the naked bongo drumming session that led to his arrest.

In October 1999, cops were called out to the actor's home in Austin, Texas, at 3 a.m. after a neighbor accused him of "disturbing the peace." Upon arriving at the residence, an officer looked in a window and saw McConaughey, who was then 29, dancing around naked and playing the drums. When cops searched the home, they allegedly found a bowl filled with marijuana stems and seeds, a bong and a pipe. McConaughey was arrested and booked on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting transportation. He was charged only with resisting transportation, a Class A misdemeanor, according to an Associated Press report at the time.

"I saw the cop's eyes get big when he identified me, and it became, 'Oh, look what we've got here,'" McConaughey recalls in the January issue of Playboy magazine. "My first call was to my mother. I was feeling guilty because I was not raised to be in jail."

Over 17 years later, the Oscar winner still doesn't see what was so "wrong" with his behavior. "What's wrong with beating on your drums in your birthday suit?" he quips. "I have no regrets about the way I got there."

That being said, McConaughey has learned from his arrest - CBS News reported that he eventually plead guilty to a charge of disturbing the peace and paid a $50 fine. "But what's the lesson?" he ponders. "Shut the window that has the beautiful scent of jasmine blowing in because it's two in the morning and you might wake a neighbor."

McConaughey has spoken out in the past about the incident and has always been a little unapologetic. When asked by GQ magazine in 2013 if he still plays the drums in the buff, he admitted, "Of course I still play the congas naked. I just close the windows."

Even at the time of his arrest, McConaughey didn't seem all that bothered about his time behind bars. "I don't want to rent a place there," he said of the jail. "But it was a nice stay for a night."

Now age 47, McConaughey is busy promoting his animated movie Sing, and revealed to ET what he's performing nowadays when the cameras are off. Check out the '80s tune that the actor says is his go-to karaoke tune:
