BOISE -- If you're going to fry a turkey this Thanksgiving, you should make sure you know the safe way to do it.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission says there are three times as many home cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day than any other day of the year -- many attributed to mistakes made when deep-frying turkeys.

We got some tips from the Boise Fire Department how to fry a turkey safely.

"You make margins of safety. You have 15 feet from your house," said Robert Boehm with the Boise Fire Department. "You've got oil that's not too hot. You've got a burner that's checked and safe. You've got propane that's easy to turn off, and you've got a fire extinguisher. And then the best thing you can have is working smoke detectors in your house."

The temperature of your oil should not be more than 350 degrees and make sure you don't overfill your pot with oil, leave three to four inches at the top of your pot.
