ST. LOUIS — Sixty hometown heroes touched down at St. Louis International Airport to an enthusiastic crowd and lots of fanfare.
"This event is amazing. I'm so impressed, " said 93-year-old Korean War Veteran Carl Carlie.
Carlie is just one of the many proud to be tapped as the Greater St. Louis Honor Flight's 3000th Veteran to fly to Washington D.C.
The veterans spent the day visiting war memorials and other popular, tourist attractions.
The heartwarming journey signifies the organization's commitment to honoring veterans from the St. Louis Metro Area.
"The trip was great. We had a wonderful time. Everything was amazing, on time and smooth," said Carlie.
Hours later, the brave men who proudly served their country, returned to St. Louis to the open arms of their loved ones, a special salute to service and sacrifice and a spectacular, well-deserved parade through the airport.
"It's about time. You know for many of us Vietnam Veterans we didn't get the proper welcome home after the war, so this is timely and well-deserved," said Vietnam Veteran Tom Bommarito.
"I think it's just wonderful. It's really great. I don't know what to say. It's overwhelming," said Vietnam Veteran Dean Powell.
Veterans are selected on a first-come, first-served basis, with priorities given to World War II veterans, followed by Korean War and Vietnam Veterans.
Today's landmark 3000th honor flight was truly a trip and honor the veterans will treasure for a lifetime.
"It was a grand time. Thank everyone for supporting us," said Carlie.
Tuesday's flight was the last mission of the 2023 flight season for the organization.
