Monday morning Albertsons celebrated the groundbreaking of a new flagship store in Boise.
The new store will be located on Broadway and Beacon and is set to be completed sometime next year. It will be the first new Albertsons in Idaho since 1999.
Company officials say they want to make the new location a destination shopping spot with lots of "bells and whistles."
"It’s going to be a big store with lots of departments that we think that customers will like. A big food service offering, upstairs with a wine bar and a patio lots of new items,” said Albertsons Chairman & CEO Bob Miller.
Albertsons also announced that they have acquired the location of the former Shopko store on Eagle and Fairview in Meridian.
Albertsons officials say they like the location because it is "the busiest street corner in Boise."
There, Albertsons plans to build what they call "one of the finest grocery stores in the U.D."
That location will be over 100,000 square feet and is set to open in 2018.
With the expansion, Albertsons expects to add 500 new employees over the next year.
