8 car burglaries in reported in Meridian neighborhood

A string of burglaries happened in the same neighborhood over the weekend. Police say they were crimes of opportunity.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Lock your doors!

That's the message the Meridian Police Department is hoping people listen to after someone broke into eight cars.

That string of car burglaries happened over the weekend.

Since then neighbors tell KTVB they've seen some extra police patrol in the area.

Meridian police say they've seen this type of crime happen in different parts of the city.

But a neighborhood off of Eagle and Victory roads was hit the worst with eight cars burglarized in a matter of days.

Police say the most significant items taken were some credit cards and $235 in cash.

Michael Barnes says he noticed someone broke into his car Monday morning and stole a watch.

“I work hard to get what I earn and it's frustrating that someone's just going around taking stuff,” Barnes said.

“That's what they'll do, they'll pick a neighborhood and start going through the neighborhood checking doors, and if they find open doors they'll go through your vehicle,” said Meridian Police Deputy Chief Tracy Basterrechea.

Right now, police say there are no leads as to who is behind this.

But they often see a spike when it comes to this type of crime in the summer time when school is out.

They are looking closely at the cars and taking fingerprints in hopes of finding the burglar.

KTVB also reached out to Boise police to see if they're seeing a spike in car burglaries.

They get reports about these crimes of opportunities throughout the year. Already this year they've had 228 car burglaries.

Police can't say it enough -- lock your cars.
