Authorities are continuing to investigate a shooting that claimed the lives of four individuals on the 500 block of West Brown Ave in Kellogg, Idaho. The incident occurred around 7:20 p.m. Sunday, and a 31-year-old male has been booked into the Shoshone County Jail on probable cause for murder.
KREM is still working to confirm the identity of the suspect.
"This is a tragic situation that will affect the Kellogg community. Detectives continue working to establish a timeline and what led to the shooting," said District 1 Investigations Lieutenant Paul Berger. "As this case will go through the judicial process, we are ensuring every angle is covered with a thorough investigation."
The Shoshone County Coroner's Office has taken custody of the shooting victims and will release their identities, as well as the cause and manner of their deaths, in a future update.
KREM 2 was at the scene of the shooting, speaking with neighbors who say they are still shaken up over what occurred.
Neighbor Christy Woolum has lived in Kellogg most of her life and is grappling with what happened across the street.
"We were in the backyard on my patio doing a weekly family dinner," Woolum said. "I think all we heard were sirens.”
Woolum says the shooting kept her up for the rest of the night.
"I mean, I just stayed up and kept processing it," Woolum said. "Watching what was going on and seeing all the policemen surrounding the area still, and knowing my brother-in-law Paul was across the street providing them a place at the church.”
Paul Roberts, the associate pastor of Mountain View Congregational Church, opened up his building for officers as a base of operations.
"We were here until just about 11 o’clock last night and checked and it was clear," Roberts said. "The police were gonna be there all night long.”
Although investigators have confirmed that the suspect is a neighbor of the victims, law enforcement will not disclose the nature of their relationships or the motive until after the initial court appearance, at which point relevant records will be available. Detectives have assured the community that all parties involved in the homicide have been identified and believe there is no ongoing danger to the public.
The Idaho State Police have collaborated with the Shoshone County Sheriff's Office, Kellogg Police Department and the Shoshone County Prosecuting Attorney's Office throughout the night, obtaining search warrants and conducting a meticulous investigation into the case.
