BOISE, Idaho — An arrest warrant has been issued for the man who pulled out a knife during a traffic stop in Boise and was shot by a police officer earlier in mid-November.
Gabriel Pope, 22, was identified by the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force led by Garden City Police, as the suspect involved in the shooting and is currently being treated in the hospital. Once he's released from the hospital, police said he will be arrested.
Pope is facing several charges in connection to an incident, including assault, resisting arrest, providing false information to an officer, and use of a deadly weapon.
On Nov. 13, the Boise Police Department said an officer stopped a vehicle for a fictitious plate near South Division Avenue and West Howe Street around 3:05 p.m. A passenger of the vehicle, now identified as Pope, pulled out a knife after providing police with false information, according to a news release.
The Pope allegedly ran from the scene into a neighborhood near South Division Avenue, prompting police to launch drones and begin searching for the suspect after setting up a perimeter.
An officer located the Pope on Colorado Avenue and attempted to approach him. Authorities said he was shot by one Boise Police officer after refusing commands to get on the ground and charging at the officer with the knife.
The Pope was injured and taken to an area hospital by Ada County Paramedics. Officers provided medical aid on the scene following the shooting, according to police.
Boise Police said there were no other injuries. The other people inside the involved vehicle remained at the traffic stop after the Pope fled the scene.
The officer involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, per policy.
