CHALLIS, Idaho — A 47-year-old man from Challis, Curtis Lee Caton, is in custody at the Lemhi County Jail after he shot at minors, their parents and then had a standoff with police for six hours.

According to the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office (BCSO), on May 11 around 11:25 p.m., officers went to the area of near Summit Circle and Blue Mountain Rd. in Challis. Caton and several minors were involved in a disturbance and police said Caton fired at them as they left.

As police conversed with Caton he eventually released the woman and after six hours he surrendered. No one was injured.

Caton was taken to the Custer County Jail and booked and charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm into an occupied vehicle. He was then transported to the Lemhi County Jail for holding.

BCSO said further charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing. Further charges related to the incident are pending as the investigation continues.

"Custer County Sheriff Maydole would like to thank the community for their patience and cooperation as Deputies worked to keep the situation contained, ultimately resulting in a peaceful outcome. We appreciate the response and resources from the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office S.W.A.T. and Southeast Idaho S.T.A.R. tactical teams working with our Deputies for a successful resolution," stated the release.
