Newly filed court documents share details leading to deadly Twin Falls shooting

The two suspects had stolen several vehicles over the span of a couple of days, according to court documents. The theft spree resulted in a father of three dead.

BOISE, Idaho — Court documents released Monday revealed information leading up to the deadly Capri Drive shooting in Twin Falls that killed Fred Rodriguez.

According to filed court documents, the two suspects involved, 18-year-old Mi'Quavis Taylor and 19-year-old Kaden Thomson, had stolen multiple cars over the course of a couple of days. They were booked into the Ada County Jail Friday on unrelated charges, where they then admitted to the crimes.

Court documents show that days before the shooting, the two stole a white Ford pick-up and split up. Thompson went to Boise, and Taylor stayed in Twin Falls.

On Wednesday, Twin Falls police received a report of a fight and a man being shot in the Target parking lot on N. Blue Lakes Boulevard. The report states that after the Target shooting, Taylor called Thomson to pick him up, and they met back up in Twin Falls.

Attorneys said Taylor and Thomson agreed to break into more cars to steal guns and valuables. Documents state that Thomson had a key from a van he had broken into earlier in the week. So, they decided to drive to Capri Drive in the stolen white pick-up to steal a separate van parked in a residential driveway on Capri.

During the attempted theft, the homeowner, Fred Rodriguez, came out with a baseball bat to confront Thomson. That's when court documents said Thomson shot Rodriguez.

First responders arrived at the scene they performed lifesaving measures, but Rodriguez died Thursday morning at the scene due to gunshot wounds, according to the documents.

The documents said Taylor and Thomson fled the scene and headed to Boise. Boise police said the next morning, they tried to pull over a driver of a white pick for drunk driving, but they took off and eventually crashed. The two people in the truck were Taylor and Thomson.

Police said they ran after they crashed the truck, but were eventually arrested. During his arrest, Taylor told police that Thomson had shot Rodriguez.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Thomson and Taylor were interviewed by police separately and admitted to various crimes.

The documents show that when police asked Thomson about the deadly shooting on Capri Drive, specifically about when he fired the first shot, Thompson said that Rodriguez was in the passenger seat on his knees in a crouched position, facing Thompson with a bat held by both his hands over his right shoulder in a swinging position.

Both Taylor and Thomson are facing dozens of charges in both Ada County and Twin Falls County, including first-degree murder, grand theft and burglary, prosecutors said.

A GoFundMe page was set up for the Rodriguez family for the funeral and other expenses. Fred Rodriguez was a husband and a father to three children.
