Elmore County Sheriff's deputy shoots man following altercation after crash

Idaho State Police is investigating, the man is in critical condition.

ELMORE COUNTY, Idaho — A man was shot by an Elmore County Sheriff's deputy and is in critical condition. According to the Idaho State Police (ISP), and the sheriff's office, on Nov. 5, law enforcement received reports of a reckless driver on I-84 in the afternoon.

Police said the vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and crashed near milepost 87, igniting a small brush fire.

"At the crash site, an Elmore County Sheriff's deputy attempted to take the 36-year-old male driver from Idaho into custody but was engaged in a physical altercation. The situation escalated, and the deputy discharged his firearm multiple times, injuring the driver," stated a news release.

Police said the driver received medical care and was airlifted to a local hospital. He is in critical condition but is expected to survive.

ISP is conducting an independent investigation.
