CLEARWATER COUNTY, Idaho — An escaped Idaho inmate and his suspected accomplice are now suspects in two homicide investigations in North Idaho.
Clearwater County officials confirmed Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour, the Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) inmate and his alleged accomplice who escaped after shooting at three correctional officers, are under investigation for two murders in Clearwater and Nez Perce Counties. The news comes just hours after the pair was arrested in Twin Falls following a short vehicle pursuit.
In a news conference Thursday, Boise Police Department (BPD) announced that law enforcement officials captured the two suspects involved in the coordinated escape of a prison inmate at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise Wednesday, which resulted in three law enforcement officers being shot and injured.
The two were arrested in Twin Falls shortly after 2 p.m. Mountain Time on Thursday.
According to Idaho State Police (ISP), the men left the Boise area and headed to north central Idaho. Detectives located a Honda Civic, which was used in the escape, near Leland.
Later, detectives began investigating two homicides that occurred in Nez Perce and Clearwater counties. ISP said both homicides involve adult male victims and are actively being investigated.
"We did find the shackle at the scene of one of the homicides, so that's one of the ways we tied them together," ISP said.
Clearwater County officials told KREM 2 the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office received a request for a welfare check at approximately 8 p.m. on Wednesday. When they arrived, they found a deceased man.
Information about the Nez Perce County homicide remains limited at this time.
