BOISE -- Idaho State Police continue to receive reports of people getting calls from someone claiming to be from ISP. The number appearing on caller ID shows up as an actual number from Idaho State Police, but it is a scam.
This scammer appears to be targeting students and professors, as well as foreign nationals, and is telling the person that they call that have an arrest warrant and that the person needs to pay money to clear the warrant or face arrest or deportation.
"Unfortunately, the calls that are being received appear to be based outside the borders of the US," says Major Clark Rollins. "There is little that law enforcement can do to stop these scammers, but the Federal Trade Commission has set up a website to compile complaints to establish patterns of fraud and abuse for use by various law enforcement agencies."
Police would like to remind the public that the police will not call you asking for money. If you receive a similar call, hang up and call police.
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be the Idaho State Police, any other law enforcement or any government employee and they are asking for money, please do not send any money or provide any personal or financial information over the telephone. If you want to report that you have been a victim and have sent money or provided financial information, please call the Idaho State Police at 208-846-7550.
