Idaho State Police investigating two murders allegedly related to escaped Boise inmates

ISP said two escaped inmates from Boise killed 83-year-old James L. Mauney and 72-year-old Gerald "Don" Henderson

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Idaho State Police released new information on the suspected murders related to two escaped Idaho inmates.

According to ISP, Skylar Meade and Nicholas Umphenour, two escaped Idaho Department of Corrections (IDOC) inmates killed two people while driving through north Idaho. ISP said the deaths of 83-year-old James L. Mauney and 72-year-old Gerald "Don" Henderson are connected to the escaped inmates.

ISP said Meade and Umphenour drove through north Idaho in a stolen Honda Civic and encountered 83-year-old James Mauney. Meade and Umphenour drove Mauney and his dogs in the victim's Chrysler Pacifica. Law enforcement found Mauney's body and the Civic near Leland, Idaho on March, 20.

ISP also investigated the body of Henderson outside of Orofino on March 20. ISP found a pair of shackles that Meade could have left at the scene. Idaho police believe Henderson knew the suspects but did not know to what extent. Mauney's dogs were found at Henderson's home and were returned to the family unharmed.

Later, on March 21, ISP found Meade and Umphenour in Twin Falls County, Idaho. Meade was stopped and arrested. Umphenour tried to run but he was also arrested. ISP said no shots were fired during the arrests.

Police also arrested a 52-year-old woman for allegedly helping Meade escape. She was booked into Twin Falls County Jail.

The cause and manner of death of both Henderson and Mauney are under investigation.

ISP is actively investigating the case, but does not expect to release any new updates in the future.
