BOISE, Idaho — Former Fairmont Junior High principal, Christopher Ryan, was back in an Ada County courtroom Thursday as the presiding judge ruled on three motions in Ryan's case as he faces a felony charge of injury to a child.
The defense filed two motions to suppress evidence, both in regard to Ryan's phone. One was for the seizure of Ryan's phone in 2022, the second was to suppress evidence recovered from the phone.
Judge Baskin denied the first motion about the seizure of Ryan's phone, citing probable cause in taking it. However, Baskin granted the second motion to suppress evidence, agreeing that the "scope of the search warrant was overly broad."
The third motion was to continue trial on grounds that expert witnesses were unavailable for the original jury trial date set for Feb. 20. The court made the decision on the continuance motion, ultimately moving the jury trial date to April 1.
Ryan was the principal at Fairmont Junior High during the time that social worker Scott Crandall was employed there.
Crandell was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, and Ryan is accused of knowing and not stopping the relationship after other teachers warned Ryan of the inappropriate nature of Crandell and the student. Crandell took his life in December of 2022, shortly after the investigation into the relationship began.
Ryan was then charged with the felony charge of injury to a child.
