KELLOGG, Idaho — The man accused of murdering four of his neighbors in a Kellogg, Idaho, apartment on June 18, 2023, is scheduled to go before a jury in March for the quadruple murders.
The court released a plethora of dates and deadlines Monday in the murder case between the State of Idaho and Majorjon Kaylor, 31. Two of the dates listed reflect that the presiding judge has made decisions on two stipulations filed by the defense in November.
The previous trial date was set to begin in January 2024. However, that date was vacated in a Nov. 28 hearing - when the judge approved Kaylor's request to waive his right to a speedy trial.
In addition to the waiver, Kaylor's attorneys asked the judge to consider two "stipulations" in order to "continue the trial currently set" in the case - one was granted, one was not. These stipulations function as a compromise between the State of Idaho (plaintiff) and Majorjon Allen Kaylor (defendant).
One stipulation was for an extended deadline to complete review of discovery evidence to provide Kaylor's defense additional time to prepare for a potential trial. On the new schedule, that deadline date was not extended and remained Nov. 10, 2023.
The second was for a mediation between both parties. District Judge Barbara Duggan ordered that the parties schedule the mediation no later than Dec. 16.
Issues that may be referred to mediation include the possibility of reduced charges, agreements about sentencing recommendations or possible plea (Rule 11) agreements and the handling of restitution. In addition to standard guidelines for mediation in Idaho criminal cases, Duggan outlined that both parties are required to "make reasonable efforts and exercise good faith" during the mediation.
A caveat to mediation was that a new trial date wasn't to be set until mediation concludes or is unsuccessful.
On Monday's amended schedule, a jury trial was set for March 4 at 9 a.m., with the possibility of extending through March 15.
Kaylor is charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. He is accused of shooting and killing four of his neighbors in their home in June of 2023.
Since the murders, Kaylor has pleaded not guilty to all charges against him. If found guilty, Kaylor faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.
