WENDELL, Idaho — A man who led police on a dangerous high-speed chase along Interstate 84 and stole a truck at gunpoint was shot and killed by pursuing officers Tuesday, police said.

The chase began just after 11 a.m. when an Ada County deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on I-84, but the suspect drove away.

Law enforcement learned a short time later that the man was wanted in connection to two kidnappings and was considered armed and dangerous.

About 30 minutes after the initial traffic stop, officers and deputies spotted the vehicle on the interstate and continued pursuing the suspect.

Police say the chase reached high speeds and crossed over into oncoming traffic on I-84 between Bliss and Wendell in Gooding County.

The suspect's vehicle became disabled north of Wendell. Police say he then stole a pickup truck at gunpoint and again continued to flee law enforcement.

Eventually, pursuing officers shot the man, ending the chase at a dairy near Wendell.

CPR was performed on the suspect, who died at the scene, police said. Investigators have not yet released the man's identity.

The Critical Incident Task Force (CITF), comprised of all major law enforcement agencies in the Magic Valley, was activated to investigate the incident. The Twin Falls Police Department is leading the investigation.

Police say no one else was injured.

Anyone with information, or who was a witness, is asked to call the Twin Falls Police Department at (208) 735-7200.
