CALDWELL, Idaho — Authorities say one man is in custody in connection with a homicide that occurred in a farm field west of Caldwell this morning.
Around 9 a.m. Friday, Canyon County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a shooting in a farm field near the intersection of Upper Pleasant Ridge Road and Beet Road.
Deputies say a 45-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
A short time later, 58-year-old Rene Jaramillo Navarrete of Nampa was arrested on second-degree murder. He is currently in the custody of the Canyon County Sheriff's Office but no charges have been filed yet.
Police say there were a number of witnesses at the time of the shooting, which helped them find the shooter quickly and take him into custody.
"We have numerous witnesses to the altercation and what it was reported at this time is a verbal dispute between two individuals," Canyon County Sheriff Kieran Donahue said.
Donahue says both the suspect and victim worked at the field for a local farmer. It is unknown how long they've known each other.
"Quite frankly, it's a sad situation all around you have two families who have experienced significant tragedy in their lives today," he said.
An autopsy is expected to happen on Monday.
Investigators are not releasing any further details on the victim until his family is notified.
