NYSSA - Authorities in Malheur County are investigating after someone caused extensive damage to about 40 headstones at Hilltop Memorial Cemetery.

Nyssa police said in a Facebook post that the damage was discovered at the cemetery on Hilltop Road Thursday morning.

"The type of scumbag cowards who would destroy the memories of innocent people’s loved ones is one of the lowest forms of human beings and deserve to answer for their childish and irresponsible behavior," Nyssa Police Chief Raymond Rau said in the post.

Malheur County Sheriff Brian Wolfe said the damage happened sometime between 10 p.m. Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The vandals appear to have used a heavy hammer or some type of ramming device to break the headstones.

The gravesites appear to have been chosen at random, Wolfe said.

If your loved one's headstone was damaged, police are asking that you call (541) 216-8248. Rau said insurance should cover the cost of replacement, and there are people available to help coordinate that process.

Anyone with information on the vandalism is urged to call local law enforcement.
