Prosecutor's office seeking death penalty against man charged with helping Boise inmate escape

Umphenour and Skylar Meade, the Boise inmate, are accused of killing Mauney while they were on the run from authorities following an incident in Boise.

NEZ PERCE COUNTY, Idaho — The Nez Perce County Prosecutor's Office is seeking the death penalty against a man who is charged with a Boise inmate escape and killing a man.

Nicholas Umphenour, who is accused of killing 83-year-old-James Mauney, appeared in court for the first time on Thursday. Umphenour and Skylar Meade, the Boise inmate, are accused of killing Mauney while they were on the run from authorities following an incident in Boise.

Umphenour was in Ada County before being transported to the Nez Perce County Detention Facility.

No bond was set for Umphenour, and he will be arraigned on December 12.

"Seeking the death penalty is appropriate in this case considering the defendant’s complete lack of regard for the life of Mr. Mauney," Prosecutor Justin Coleman said. "We’ll continue to fight in both this case and the co-defendant’s case to get justice for the victim."

Umphenour was sentenced to life in prison last month. Meade faced a judge in August, where he stood silent and did not enter a plea. Prosecutors are also seeking the death penalty against Meade.
