Trial begins for former ISP trooper accused of killing wife three years ago

Daniel C. Howard, 57, was arrested on April 21, 2023, in connection to the 2021 murder of his wife, Kendy Howard.

COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho — The trial for the former Idaho State Police Trooper accused of killing his wife three years ago began Monday afternoon.

Daniel Howard was arrested for his wife, Kendy's murder last spring and is currently out on bond.

Howard is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection to his wife's death. On Monday, attorneys told the jury in their opening statements why they should or should find him guilty of that charge.

Initial reports said Howard told investigators his wife died by suicide. But, the Kootenai County Prosecutor said evidence presented in this trial will show Kendy's death was not suicide.

In response, Howard's defense attorney said he plans to call on experts who will point out evidence that prove it was suicide.

The prosecutor explained Howard and his wife were going through a divorce and they shared $2 million in assets, which is why the state claims Howard’s motive was the fact that his wife would get half of everything in the divorce.

KREM 2 did hear testimony from a detective who responded to the crime scene. He spoke to what the scene looked like and what Howard's mannerisms were like.

Court went into recess at 5 p.m. The trial will resume Tuesday morning at 9 a.m.
