BOISE, Idaho — It’s the end of an era for four schools in Nampa -- Centennial Elementary, Snake River Elementary, Greenhurst Elementary and West Middle School. Those four schools had their last day of school on Thursday, May 30, and will now close their doors for good.
“It’s kind of a bittersweet end to our school year,” said Gregg Russell, superintendent for the Nampa School District.
The schools had to close due to less funding from an AD enrollment switch, an enrollment decline across Nampa School District and less government stimulus money.
Russell said the community's reaction has been mixed, with some excited to move into newer buildings and others sad to say goodbye.
"Those four buildings have different plans for the future," Russell said. "Union High School will move into West Middle’s campus, the police department and the Boys and Girls Club will move into Centennial, a pre-school will start in Greenhurst’s building and the Gateways program will move into Snake River."
The school district will also undergo a rezoning in August, which will determine where students will transfer.
Russell told KTVB many of the staff members will be transferring to other schools in the area with the students, but not all of the positions will be able to move.
“Its really sad... schools are a part of the community and part of the culture, particularly some of the schools have been generational here,” Russell said.
