BOISE, Idaho — It's been nearly three years since Boise voters overwhelmingly passed a $172.5 million bond to improve all 48 schools in the district - with nearly half of those needing major renovations.
Wednesday morning, 18 months after starting construction, Hillside Junior High School officially opened the doors to a new cafeteria, gymnasium and classrooms.
The school was built in 1960 and originally intended for temporary use.
Nearly 70 years later, it was rundown and overcrowded.
The gymnasium is now big enough to hold every student and the cafeteria is double the size of the last one.
"This is important not only to our students, most importantly our students, it's very important for them to have better facilities, larger facilities for cafeteria, allows them to get through the lines at lunch much after and break lines, but it also allows our community to have access to multiple venues," said Principal Dr. Randy Lance.
The bond also funded the addition of three new classrooms.
