KUNA -- The Kuna School District received a generous gift Tuesday night.
Wilma and LaVar Thornton donated 100 acres of land located on East Kuna Road. According to a news release, the donation represents a deep commitment to the district's mission of education and the continued growth of the community.
Wilma Thornton, a former Kuna school teacher, said "We are grateful that we have been able to do our part to provide for the education of our young people. LaVar and I wanted to give back to a community that has given us so much."
School board members accepted the gift at a meeting Tuesday night and pledged to work with patrons to ensure the land honors the Thornton's wishes, saves the taxpayers money and provides for the education of future generations.
There are approximately 5,300 students in the Kuna School District. District officials say that number has doubled over the last 10 years and continues to grow.
Administrator of District Communications David Reinhart says planning will begin soon to engage citizens on how best to prepare for the future.
