New elementary school coming to Notus

Notus School District officials are excited about the growth opportunities a new elementary school will bring.

NOTUS -- After three tries, voters approved a $4.8 million school bond back in May to build a new elementary school in Notus.

The building will replace the district's old schoolhouse, built in 1926.

The 90-year-old building has had issues with flooding, and back in 2014, the Notus superintendent told us the school's foundation has started to push in.

On Friday, the Notus school board chairman showed us the blueprints for the new elementary school building. She says it's an exciting project.

"It'll mean a lot. It just helps continue our growth. We will have actually more capacity. Right now there's just 10 classrooms and some of those it's all odd shapes, sizes and so this will be consistent sized classrooms. There will be 12," said Barb Skogsberg.

There will also be a music room in the new elementary school.

Once everyone is moved over the the new building, Skogsberg says the old schoolhouse will be torn down except for the gym, which will be used as a community center.

She told us the new elementary school could be up and running as early as January 2017.

There are around 400 students in the Notus School District right now and around 200 attend classes at the elementary school.

Skogsberg says the new building will have room to grow with capacity for 300 students.
