IDAHO, USA — With Christmas only a short three weeks away, South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) is helping the community stay vaccinated by offering flu shots.
"It takes up to two weeks for a vaccine to fully boost your immune system," said Logan Hudson, SCPHD public health division administrator. "If you wait until a family member or neighbor has the flu to get vaccinated- it won't be as effective."
For those who are at high risk of serious flu complication, vaccinations are very important, officials stressed in a news release. High risk people may include children under 2 years old, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions and the elderly.
The flu is contagious before symptoms start, according to the South Central Public Health District, who recommends practicing good hygiene at all times to help prevent the spread of the virus.
Other measures SCPHD recommends are:
- Getting a flu vaccination
- Wash hands often, for at least 20 seconds, and particularly after sneezing or coughing
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth whenever possible
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with your elbow or a tissue.
- Stay home when sick, and wear a mask if you absolutely must go out.
Idaho residents who are over the age of 65 are encouraged to receive the high-dose version of the flu vaccine for best protection. SCPHD said it has plenty of the high-dose flu shot available.
