A group of Idaho children took part in the world-record attempt at Roaring Springs Water Park Thursday.

MERIDIAN, Idaho — Chilly weather Thursday morning did not deter more than 100 children who turned out at Roaring Springs Water Park to learn basic water safety skills.

But this was not your ordinary swim lesson.

It was all part of a world-record attempt for the largest simultaneous swimming lesson.

More than 40,000 kids at an estimated 600 locations in 24 countries are expected to participate in the 24-hour event.

Organizers say the goal is spread the message that swimming is a life-saving skill for children and a vital tool to prevent drowning.

Drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury-related death for children ages 1-4 in the United States.
