Now that Christmas has come and gone, the next big day on the calendar is New Year’s Eve.

Preparations are currently underway for next week's big celebration.

The center piece of the event is at midnight when the giant, glowing potato slowly drops from the sky.

Over the years the event has added new and improved features, and Idaho Potato Drop CEO Dylan Cline says this year you can expect even more.

"This is the party on New Year’s Eve," Cline said. “We make it interesting every year we have some surprises, and this year is no exception."

Cline says he can't wait to show off the new newest edition of the famous event that will feature a full afternoon of free activities and entertainment centered in Cecil D. Andrus Park right outside the state Capitol.

“We are really excited to start a little early this year, everything starts at 3 p.m. with the Gateway Parks tuber luge, a free public tubing hill," Cline said.

Following the new and improved tuber hill, winter athletes from across the country will take to the skies for some adrenaline-filled competition.

“There is a brand new rail jam built by Gateway Parks that is going to be a big huge tow in a quarter pipe for the Toyota rail jam," Cline said.

Organizers are excited to bring back musical entertainment, which kicks off on the on the main stage at 3 p.m. with a packed lineup stretching through the strike of midnight..

"We've got Jeff Crosby and the Refugees, Matt Hopper & the Roman Candles, American Mile from Los Angeles, we've got Marshall Poole, Gipsy Moonrise, and the Boise Rock School," Cline said.

And, there will also be some big surprises on the main stage

“This year there is going to be some pretty big musical guest appearances and if you want to see who it is, you are just going to have to be there to find out."

The popular VIP room returns this year with a brand new atmosphere and collection of refreshments.

"The VIP room has moved locations over in front of St. Lawrence Gridiron to provide craft cocktails and gourmet hors-d'oeuvres for our guests," said Cline.

Of course, the main event at midnight will be the world-famous Glow-tato. It too has some new features this year that for now are being kept a secret, but Cline would give us a small teaser

"Let's just say that the Glow-tato is going to be nice and hot this year, we will just say that," he said..
