Jury finds deputy, motorcycle rider responsible for 2014 crash on Idaho 21

The jury said that each man is responsible for 50 percent of $4.8 million in damages to be paid to the motorcycle's passenger.

BOISE, Idaho — A jury has reached a verdict in a civil case stemming from a 2014 crash involving a motorcycle rider and a Boise County sheriff's deputy.

According to Idaho State Police, the crash happened when the deputy made a sudden U-turn to chase a speeder, causing the motorcycle rider driving behind the deputy to wreck.

The lawsuit was brought by a legal conservator for Chellus Dawn Towell, the passenger on the motorcycle who suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The jury trial found that both Deputy David Lee and the motorcycle's driver, Douglas Towell, were at fault for the crash. Boise County Clerk Mary Prisco tells KTVB that the jury found both culpable because Lee made the sudden U-turn and because Douglas Towell was intoxicated at the time.

The jury said that each man is responsible for 50 percent of $4.8 million in damages to be paid to Chellus Towell.

A judgement in the case is still pending
