BOISE, Idaho — Disciples Coffee is donating 100% of their proceeds between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday April 27 to support the family of Deputy Tobin Bolter after he died in the line of duty.
Police shot and killed the suspect, 65-year-old Dennis Mulqueen, according to the Ada County Coroner's Office. Bolter died at the hospital Sunday morning.
He was 27 years old.
"It hits you hard as a law enforcement officer," Disciples owner Christian Melrose said. "You just understand there's a family hurting. There's a family grieving and this business has afforded us the opportunity to give back to a family who has sacrificed so much."
Melrose never met Bolter; however, Bolter did belong to his brother's church - a business partner in the coffee industry. But before the coffee business, Melrose served as a juvenile probation officer in El Dorado County, California for 20 years.
Disciples opened six months ago with a focus on Christian-based values. They feel a calling to extend support to those in the community who need it most.
"Just trying to keep that faith and spread positivity," Melrose said. "We need to do this right. It needs to be big to make an impact."
Word of the fundraiser is spreading online. A Disciples Coffee Facebook post has reached 340 shares from customers and community members.
"To think that, you know, it was a regular day for him. He was just doing his job of protecting us as a community. Serving us," customer Bralyn Decker said. "I think that's why the community is coming together to pour into this family."
All Sid's Garage locations are also hosting a fundraiser on Sunday, April 28. All sales will be donated to Deputy Bolter's wife.
"At Sid's Garage, we treasure this community, emergency personal, and military. The events of April 20th involving Deputy Bolter leaves us with great sadness and a heavy heart. Deputy Bolter made the ultimate sacrifice in doing his duty and we give our heartfelt condolences to his colleagues and family," stated a news release.
The City of Middleton, where Bolter lived, is hosting a vigil for the deputy at 9 p.m. Wednesday. Multiple Middleton-based businesses are collecting donations for the family.
Donations directly to the family can be made at this verified GoFundMe link.
