WILDER, Idaho — It's a fight for the follicles, and the Gem State is well-represented in this year's national mullet competition. Two Idaho kids
It's an online mullet competition with different age brackets and cash prices.
Dillynn Lisby... A.K.A "Mad Dog Jax"
Lisby 9 years old from Wilder, Idaho. His stage name is "Mad Dog Jax" as a tribute to his late father.
His father died in a motorcycle accident when Lisby was four years old.
"The 'Mad Dog' came from my dad's initials, 'Mad Dog,' and my middle name's Jax, that my dad named from this movie," Lisby told KTVB.
Lisby's mother also passed away before Lisby was two years old.
It took about a year for him to grow out his long mullet, and he's been maintaining it for an additional year, Lisby told KTVB.
And he only trusts let's Kyle Reid from Bladeslinger Barbershop in Marsing to maintain his "hair-do." It's spiky business in the front and a long party in the back.
"Sometimes the tangles are not bad, but then every time I go out of the pool, they're hurting me," Lisby said. "Every time I try to brush it, it hurts so bad."
He added mornings are the worst.
"A rat nest, messy all over the place," he said. "I usually have to, because the back just sticks up, so I just have to spray it with the spray bottle and then brush it down."
Reid said Lisby first walked into their shop after he attempted to cut his own bangs.
"It was ery off center," Reid said. "It didn't look mullet-ey. So, we reestablished the mullet... trimmed off this side... We started doing designs on both sides."
Lisby's hair grows pretty fast, and their doing regular haircuts on him about every three to four weeks, Reid said.
Summers are tough to have long hair in, according to Lisby.
"Yesterday, I was moving a whole lot of tires and stuff, and I was just dripping sweat," he said.
Lisby isn't sure if he'll keep the mullet forever, but when it comes time to cut it off, he's going to donate the hair, he said.
"I keep whispering in his ear, whenever Grandma's not paying attention... Don't worry, we'll cut your mullet off whenever," Reid said.
If Lisby wins the grand prize of $5,000 for the "kids category." He said he'd give half the money to his 27-year-old sister and use the other half to fix up his dad's blue Durango.
Tate Reeve, A.K.A "The Curly Tater"
Lisby met the other Idaho kid in the competition. Tate Reeve, who's stage name is "The Curly Tater". Reeve lives in Twin Falls.
Both Lisby and Reeve were on Wake Up Idaho Tuesday morning, showing off their mullets and bonding over their hair-dos.
