IDAHO, USA — Indigenous leaders are sharing their perspectives Friday with Idaho Energy Freedom, an education-based nonprofit, on the future of clean energy in the state.
The webinar is open to the public from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. MT Friday.
The event is hosting two guests that belong to Indigenous tribes in the state. Chantel Greene is the founder and CEO of Xexus Greene Energy; she is also a former Nez Perce vice-chairwoman of the tribal council. Xexus is 'green' in Nez Perce, according to Greene.
Talia Martin - a member of the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes of Fort Hall - will also speak at the event; Martin has more than 12 years of experience in tribal and federal government waste management and renewable energy. Martin formerly worked as a tribal liaison with the U.S. Department of Energy.
"I grew up in Lapwai, Idaho, and I come from a fishing family. So, you know, advocating for our natural resources, our waterways, our animals, our plants. And being able to make those sustainable, and learning how to live within, is something that I've been entrenched with since I was little," Greene said. "I advocate for dam removal, that can come with a lot of opposition, because that, that means that we actually have to change what our energy consumption actually is as of right now. And also, where the power is actually coming from."
The webinar event - Idaho's Clean Energy Future: Indigenous Perspectives - is available here. Registration is necessary at the link.
