BOISE, Idaho — As many Idahoans are making Fourth of July plans, the Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS) and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) encourage drivers to be safe behind the wheel as there have been many road fatalities.
ITD reports that since May 24, 2024, there have been 31 people killed in car crashes in Idaho. Looking at the whole year, there have been 105 deaths so far, which makes 2024 a deadlier year than 2023.
Comparatively to 2023, there were 94 traffic deaths - 11 less than in 2024.
2023 was the deadliest year on Idaho roads since 2003, ITD said.
The Fourth of July falls during the 100 Deadliest Days, which occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. During that period, most of the traffic fatalities of the year occur.
"There's no better place to be than Idaho's great outdoors in the summer, but we want everyone to make it home safely too," said Highway Safety Manager Josephine Middleton. "Our actions behind the wheel are the only way we can prevent this senseless loss of life on our roads. Plan a sober ride, like a designated driver, especially if you are celebrating the holiday far from home."
OHS and law enforcement partners from across the state are teaming up to keep Idaho roads safe from impaired or drunk drivers. ITD said to expect to see more officers on the roads for DUI patrol, now through July 10.
ITD provides a few driving tips for Fourth of July and the rest of the summer:
- Always wear a seat belt. It increases your chances of surviving a crash by 50%.
- Drive engaged—no distractions behind the wheel.
- Never drink and drive. Plan a sober ride home and encourage your friends to as well.
- Obey speed limits, drive slower if conditions are poor.
