A new mural is coming to Downtown Boise honoring J.J. Saldaña

J.J. Saldaña's legacy has lived on after his passing in 2023. The City of Boise and the community have found a way to honor his work.

BOISE, Idaho — New artwork is coming to the heart of Boise.

A tribute mural started on Friday, Aug. 23, in downtown to honor the life of J.J. Saldaña, who is still a beloved community member. The mural aims to be a symbol of love to honor his legacy.

Juan Saldaña, also known as J.J., passed away in 2023 and was a deeply cherished advocate for the Hispanic community in Boise.

The mural, which Bobby Gaytan, the lead artist, started, will be in the alleyway of the Key Bank building in Downtown Boise.

The mural came about when Gaytan and others on the mural committee, who were close friends of J.J., came together and created the idea.

Saldaña is remembered for touching so many lives, especially empowering Latino and youth communities. He held a strong belief in the power of education and cultural pride.

“I think a lot of us looked at him as a superhero. And so, it's a reminder for people to know that there are people in the community who care and want each of us to succeed, and just being there for each other,” artist Gaytan told KTVB on Friday.

The City of Boise decided to fund the project after receiving much outreach from the community after his passing.

Friend of J.J., Irene Ruiz, is also on the mural committee dedicating time to creating this honorary memorial.

"It's been very healing because we just lost him suddenly so its been a hole in my heart, losing someone so dear to me like that. And being part of this process has mended that a little bit but I still miss him a lot. This is just a great tribute and honor for him,” said Ruiz.

The mural will serve the city as a permanent reminder of his giving spirit.

Gaytan is preparing the mural to be unveiled on September 7. He wants the design to surprise people in the community who miss J.J.
