'Gas prices are gravy': AAA Idaho reports lower gas prices ahead of busy travel week

With travel on the top of a lot of folks minds, AAA put together some tips and tricks for how to handle to holidays.

BOISE, Idaho — The holidays are here, with Thanksgiving just a day away. AAA Idaho reports that gas prices have dropped ahead of the travel rush, but be prepared for possible travel delays.

In the Gem State, the average gallon of gas cost $3.11 on Wednesday, which is four cents lower than a week ago, 26 cents less than a month ago and 53 cents lower than a year ago, Matthew Conde, public affairs director with AAA said.

Nationally, the average price for a gallon of gas sits at $3.07, which is just half a penny less than a week ago, but six cents lower than a month ago and 18 cents lower than a year ago.

Idaho ranks 15th in the country for most expensive fuel, Conde said.

“Idaho gas prices have been significantly cheaper for most of the year, and the state average is closing in on $3. Some areas, such as Coeur d’Alene, Franklin, and Idaho Falls, are already below the mark.  Hopefully, the rest of the state will catch up soon," said Conde.

With the lower gas prices, many travelers are taking advantage and hitting the roads for the holidays, which includes some 464,000 Idahoans.

“Even if you plan to fly to your destination, lower gas prices will make rental cars, family activities, and Black Friday shopping easier on your wallet,” Conde said.  “Avoiding stop and go traffic and peak congestion will stretch your miles per gallon even further.”

An early start is advised for all sorts of travel. If you're heading to the airport, give yourself at least two hours to get through.

If you're driving, AAA Idaho recommends sharing your travel plans with loved ones, dress in layers and don't blindly follow your GPS. Watch for ice on the roads and pack your patience.

AAA Idaho also shared the following tips for what to include in a car emergency kit:

  • Protein snacks and water
  • First aid kit
  • Flares or reflectors
  • Basic tools
  • Blankets, warm coats, gloves
  • An old tarp to shield you from water and snow if you need to change a tire, etc.

AAA Idaho also advises that you slow down and move over for emergency vehicles. It's Idaho state law. It helps protect road workers, and keeps traffic flowing.
