BOISE, Idaho — As more drivers hit the road, traveling thousands of miles throughout the United States, AAA Idaho wants drivers to pack a vehicle emergency kit as anything can happen while on the road.

“When the unexpected happens, we sometimes end up kicking ourselves for not being prepared,” AAA Idaho public affairs director Matthew Conde said. “It pays to take a close look at our emergency kit this time of year and ensure that we have the important items covered.”

AAA officials also urge drivers to remain vigilant as Memorial Day weekend marked the start of the "100 deadliest days."

In 2023, there were 7,430 crashes resulting in 79 deaths during this time period, according to Idaho State Police. Of those fatalities, 34 were due to no seatbelts, 20 to failure to maintain their lane and 11 were a result of speeding.

The road is unpredictable and a versatile emergency kit can help drivers remain vigilant.

“When things are at their worst, nothing can lift your spirits like having a good emergency kit and some resources on hand to cope with the situation," Conde stated. "Once some of your most basic needs are being met, you’ll be in a much better position to make good choices about what to do next.”

AAA provided a list of items to put within your emergency kit:

  • A first aid kit – check expiration dates on medicines and replace as needed
  • Protein snacks
  • Water to cool down people, pets, or to top off a radiator
  • Jumper cables
  • A flashlight with extra batteries
  • Mobile power for your cell phone
  • A note pad and pencil to jot down notes
  • Emergency blankets and/or a change of clothing
  • Basic tools
  • A blanket or towel to protect you from road debris and hot asphalt when changing a tire or looking under a vehicle and to stay warm as needed
  • A tarp and rope to create shade
  • Rags, towels, and/or wet wipes
  • Comfortable shoes that you could wear to hike if necessary
