BOISE, Idaho — As the Fourth of July approaches, the use of fireworks increases to celebrate our nation's independence. Festivities featuring fireworks also can pose a threat as dry weather and a small spark can ignite a wildfire.
As a preventative measure, the Ada County Board of Commissioners earlier this month banned the use of fireworks in unincorporated areas. The ban will apply outside the city limits of Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Kuna, Meridian and Star.
"The fireworks ban for Unincorporated Ada County has been approved by Ada County Commissions every year for roughly twenty years," Wednesday's news release said. "Any person in violation of the ban could be charged with a misdemeanor."
As previously reported, wildfire season is upon southern Idaho, and human activity poses the largest threat toward igniting the Gem State's landscape, including the grassy foothills in Boise's backyard.
The Idaho Department of Lands said about 80% of wildfires are caused by humans. The first step toward wildfire prevention is being aware of conditions when recreating.
