ONTARIO, Ore. — A fire was started Saturday, near Highway 86 and Grey Eagle Mine Road in Baker County, Oregon.
At roughly 2:30 p.m. on June 22, Baker County Sheriff's Office (BCSO) dispatch received a report of a fire spreading near an aread nicknamed the "Dino Pits."
The fire had multiple agencies handling it, as winds from the northwest pushed the fire uphill. Baker Rural Fire Rescue, North Powder Rural Fire Protection District, Keating Rural Fire Protection District and Lookout-Glasgow Rangeland Fire Protection Association responded to the incident, working on the blaze for roughly an hour and a half.
They were able to contain the fire with just under two acres of damage, said BCSO.
While on the scene, Deputy Ebeling spoke to two teen boys in the area. During this chat, it came to light that the two threw a smoke bomb on the dry grass, igniting the fire.
Both boys were cited for reckless burning, which is a misdemeanor.
BCSO wants to remind that fire season is here, and safety is a priority. According to BCSO, 70% of reported fires in Oregon were determined to be human caused. BCSO said to please use extreme caution when recreating in the outdoors.
Check fire dangers before hitting the great outdoors, and be familiar with the Be Ready, Be Set, Go Now evacuation system.
