Bike rodeo teaches kids summer safety tips

Now that school is out for summer break, you'll probably see lots of kids in your neighborhood racing around on their bicycles.

Local groups are using a fun way to get across the very serious message of bike safety.

Kids from across the Treasure Valley met up at the Star Branch Library today for a bike rodeo put on by the YMCA to learn about bike safety, and to test their skills around an obstacle track.

There have already been several accidents in Boise this year involving kids on bikes, and today's safety class was aimed at preventing more from happening by teaching kids to be smart and aware when out and about.

The bike rodeo is a fun outing, but it has serious lessons that organizers hope kids will keep in mind when riding their bike.

“It will bring the awareness to the parents that come as well, reminding them it is important to be careful,” said librarian Bonnie Arriola. “A number of kids may not understand how important wearing a helmet can be for their safety if they do crash, and crashing is usually inevitable."

Some important bike safety tips include being aware, staying in control, and always wear a helmet.

National safety experts also suggest making sure your child's bike is adjusted to fit your child properly, and wear bright colors when riding -- day or night.

The YMCA will be running safety clinics all summer long. Here is the full schedule.
