Wild horses to be adopted out by BLM

The horses, gathered by BLM on the Owyhee Front in September, are being put up for adoption.

BOISE, Idaho — The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced they will be hosting an adoption event at Boise Off-Range Wild Horse Corral. They said the wild horses recently gathered from the Owyhee Front will be available to those who qualify. 

The event, happening Nov. 10 - 12 a their location off of Pleasant Valley Road. As stated in the news release, there will be more than 100 wild horses for adoption. The horses were gathered from the Black Mountain, Hardtrigger and Sands Basin Herd Management areas in the Owyhee Front in Sept.

As reported by the BLM in their news release, of the horses available, 14 are six to nine-months-old geldings; 25 are six to nine-month-old fillies; roughly 30 are geldings ages two to five; and roughly 40 are mares between the ages of two and seven. 

The project adoption program aims to find wild horses and burros a good home, and the BLM is offering up to $1,000 to adopt an untrained animal. The BLM said they will also be doing inspections of the wild horses, within six months of the adoption date, to make sure all is well. 

The adoption program is part of the BLM's efforts to "periodically remove excess animals from the range to maintain healthy hers and protect other rangeland resources," said the news release. 

BLM said the program has been in place since 1973 and has placed more than 280,000 animals into approved homes across the country.

The  BLM what is needed to qualify and provided the event dates below:

Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old with no record of animal abuse.    
  • Homes must have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water and shelter.   
  • Corral fence must meet height requirements:   
    • Adult horses - 6 feet    
    • Yearlings - 5 feet   
    • Burros - 4.5 feet     

Event days:

Friday 

  •  1-5 p.m.: view the wild horses

Saturday 

  • 8 a.m.: gates open
  • 10 - 11 a.m.: competitive bidding opens
  • 1 - 5 p.m.: first come, first served 

Sunday 

  • 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.: first come, first served
