Boise Bicycle Project in need of donations ahead of holiday giveaway

The Boise Bicycle Project is hosting its Holiday Kids Bike Drive on Saturday. Donated bikes will be used for the annual giveaway in December.

BOISE, Idaho — The Boise Bike Project is hosting their annual Holiday Kids Bike Drive on Saturday at their location on South Lusk Street.

Since 2007, the organization has hosted its Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway for children in the Treasure Valley needing bikes.

According to the Boise Bike Project website, the process starts with referral partners, such as after school programs or local non-profits. The referral partners help identify families and kids in need of a bicycle. The kids then get the opportunity to draw their "dream bike" and a story along with it. Boise Bike Project then collects bikes from the community, fixes them up, and customizes the bikes to the drawings they received.

Their bike drive happening on Saturday is a way to gain more bikes ahead of their annual holiday giveaway.

On Dec. 16, the Boise Bike Project plans to give away 500 bikes to those kids in need. The event will have warm clothes, a warm meal, as well as a bike lock, helmet and their dream bike.

They are requesting bicycles of all sizes, and conditions. Volunteer opportunities for the holiday event are also available, for those who cannot donate a bike.

The Boise Bike Project's mission, according to their site, is to promote the personal, social, and environmental benefits of bicycling.
